What browser are you using?
by September 2nd, 2008 Patrick GreerTo a lot of people the question, “What browser are you using?” may seem like a silly one to ask. However just because you may be tech savvy or are open to looking for alternatives a lot of people, maybe even you will only know about the browser that came pre-installed on your computer. For a Windows user that will be some version of Internet Explorer (the icon is a big blue e), for Mac users the current default browser is Safari which icon is a compass and for a lot of Linux users the current default is probably Mozilla Firefox. In our company we use Apple computers but the default browser we use everyday is current Firefox. I started using Firefox a few years a go when Windows was my primary system and I grew tired of security issues in Internet Explorer which was either at 5.5 or version 6 at the time.
As a company we are seriously considering dropping our support for Internet Explorer 6 (which is about 7 years old now) and we are not the only ones either. Web service companies like 37 Signals are dropping support for it as well. Do you have to use Internet Explorer and why? What would happen if we dropped support for it?
In just a few short minutes I will be tuning into a webcast to learn about Google Chrome. Googles attempt to distribute their own web browser. I do know it will be based on the same software core as Apple’s Safari but appears to have some other advanced features that definitely demand I take a look at during the upcoming announcement.
have you thought about trying out the alternatives? If you are interested in more check out the Alternative Browser Alliance web site for more info and don’t forget to check out Googles announcement about Chrome.
