Recommended Podcasts for New iPod owners

by December 25th, 2007 Patrick Greer

Have you received an iPod or other portable media player this Christmas?  Of course these devices are best know and advertised for playing music that you have either ripped from a CD you already own or purchased online from the iTunes music store.  It great that you can access and carry around your entire music library but one of the least advertised but in my opinion one of the most useful things you can either listen or view is podcasts.  Podcasts are like the online equivalent to talk radio but what makes them different is the variety of topics covered.  I personally have all but stopped listening to talk radio except for a few select shows in lieu of downloading and syncing podcasts to my current “iPod” which is technically an iPhone but it has the iPod feature.

Some of you may want to eventually produce your own podcasts.  At SpinningSilk Multimedia we will be producing our own podcast and maybe more than one in 2008 as well as helping our clients produce and distribute them as well.  The following is a list of podcasts I would like to recommend.  They are ones I either listen or view on a regular basis.

Help, I got a Mac  – A podcast for new Apple computer users.  The MacBook is the most popular laptop according to Amazon this season.

Geek Brief TV – Cali Lewis showcases the latest in gadgets with her usually bubbly style.

Apple Phone Show - Do you have a new iPhone?  This podcast may be of Interest and help you.

Leo Laporte: The Tech Guy – Broadcast as a radio and redistributed as a podcast. Leo has a very balanced view between Windows and Mac machines and is dedicated to helping the computer user.

The Chris Pirillo Show – For the most part a 5 – 10 minute video podcast. Chris does the podcast from his home office.  He is geeky and goofy but very informative when it comes to technology, especially for the new computer user.

Mahalo Daily – The is a fairly new video podcast produced by Mahalo.com. The show is hosted by Veronica Belmont and covers a variety of topics. The video quality and information is excellent with just the right amount of humor.

Photoshop User TV -  Have a new digital camera and use Photoshop to edit the photos? This is an excellent podcast produced by the National Association of Photoshop Professionals.

Security Now – No matter if you use Windows, Mac or Linux or even portable devices security is allows a concern. Listen to Leo Laporte and Steve Gibson talk about the latest security issues in the world of technology.

I actually listen to a lot more but this is a list I think is great for the first time podcast listener/viewer and someone who also might be new to technology.  You should see instructions or links on the pages linked above to allow you to subscribe to each podcast so new episodes can be automatically downloaded and synced with your portable media device. Do you have any other podcasts you would like to suggest for the new iPod or computer user?
