Greenville, SC - Designing for Growth
by January 11th, 2008 Patrick GreerOn Wed. January 9th, 2008 I attended the monthly learning lunch of the Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson Technology Council (GSATC). The speaker was Knox White, the mayor of Greenville,SC. At first I wondered what he was going to say that would be “tech” related but I did learn some things, especially in lieu of the recent series on design I have been doing.
Mayor White spoke on the initiatives the city is undertaking to create an environment that attracts people to downtown. One the reasons we set up an office at 1 Cleveland Street in downtown Greenville,SC was not only the central location but also the great environment downtown with such places to go walking like Falls Park and a multitude of places and venues. Of course the building we are renting office space contains the administrative offices of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church denomination. A couple of the agencies in the building are our clients; World Witness and Outreach North America It’s convenient to be that close to those clients but even if we outgrow our current working space we still want to have a presence downtown if possible.
I’m happy that the design is a top priority of Greenville,SC and not only do I see how important it is that our city is focusing on design and a positive work environment but it also got me to thinking about how this line of thinking can be considered in a lot of situations. Is your office space, store or web site an inviting place? Do people want to do business there?
If you are interested in viewing a listening to the Mayor’s message visit post on the presentation on the GSATC web site.
