Finding time to write

by September 2nd, 2007 Patrick Greer

One thing we encourage our clients to do is to write to a “business blog” on their web site. I do realize however that finding time to write new content for your web site can be seen as just another added task in addition to our primary work.

As you may have noticed I have been writing a lot lately and my favorite classes in high school and college were my English classes yet I still struggle and have to proofread constantly and even then I will find misspellings but more often misplaced words as my mind often races faster than my fingers are typing.

Making mistakes is one thing we often do but I went through a sad phase where I allowed the discouragement from others to get me down and I didn’t do any serious writing for almost five years. Now that my fire has been rekindled my mind is more on fire than it ever has been. I think more about my business and what is of interest to others. In doing so I have learned that working on my writing has helped me become more of an expert in my field because I also have to read and study more. When I was a student at Winthrop University in the late 80’s my main motivation for declaring Mass Communication as my major was it give me the opportunity to learn new things. I did not take a direct route to get to where I am now as I had jobs in retail sales, finance and administrative support. Looking back I’m not ashamed of those jobs at all but if I could do anything different I would have spent time writing about retail sales, finance and administrative support. If no one had read those things I still would have learned more things about my work.

There is a good article on copyblogger.com called, Five Tips for Finding Time to Write. The tips include ways to focus, finding your zone and rewarding yourself. Of course a tangible reward is nice but the growth we experience when writing is a satisfying reward as well. Don’t be discouraged if no one comments on your blog as I have many people I meet in person who tell me they read something I said on this web site and liked it or found it interesting.
