I want to meet with web design companies, print brokers, etc.

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

This post will probably show up as a dedicated page later on but I wanted to get the word out and start setting up appointments ASAP. Except for some special cases it’s my plan to get out of doing web design and development myself. I still want to stay abreast of the latest technology and definitely know about trends and technology but my core skill set is developing content for web sites not actually building them myself. Yes, I can do it and I’m very competent at it but my passions lie elsewhere.

I’m not currently and actively selling web design and hosting but rather it’s my desire to match up clients with the best web design firm to meet their needs and in turn I want to develop a relationship with web design firms where I can help them get the needed content from their clients for their web sites and other new media channels.

ideally I would love to work with and have a closer relationship with designers/developers in the Upstate of South Carolina or Western North Carolina (the geographic area where I live). I want to work with local companies so we can both grow in the local economy plus it’s always a benefit if you can have personal contact with the people you do work with when possible.

A similar but different industry is the print industry. I have had contact and done business with print brokers who have helped clients find the best printer for their clients print needs. I realize that print brokers and myself may could also potentially have a similar client base to work from and refer each other too.

Are you in the Upstate of South Carolina or Western North Carolina? Do you own or represent a web design firm? I think we could have a very efficient partnership where I could both recommend your service if you are appropriate for the client and in turn I would love to help with the content side of your projects and also help train clients who have a web site with a content management system you have developed for them. Are you a local print broker? I would love to meet, share ideas, etc. Feel free to either leave a comment of contact me directly using one of the methods listed on our contact page which also includes a new Google Voice #.

When you say, “I should have gone into ’such and such’ business”

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

I often find myself observing another business and saying to myself, “Wow, I should have gone into ’such and such’ business.” Does that mean that I feel stupid or feel I have made a mistake for going into the business I already run? No, but I am usually observing a process or admiring that the business owner took advantage changes in the world around them and grabbed the proverbial bull by the horns. Yes, I will often jokingly and I admit have felt pangs of temptation when it has been a business that I know I couldn’t do myself in good conscience.

Several times I have said the above statement include;

  • I wish I had gone into the orange cone business after noticing a lot of road work going on.
  • Frustrated that I wasn’t the one who came up with the “Pull my Finger” application for the iPhone
  • Wrote a book of common sense stuff I knew and pointed out the obvious
  • Made up a goofy song and became a one-hit but successful wonder
  • Saw a gaming environment where people were easily shelling out money for a chance to win and snacks

I know there have been many other instances where I encountered a situation where I saw a lot of product being used or service being paid for. Most of the time I was sort of joking in a half-hearted way that I may have missed an opportunity. Truth is never had the desire to make a pull my finger application, probably would have never been motivated to produce orange traffic cones, etc. but what can I learn for such observations?

We, I and of course you can remember the following;

  • Keep track for future plans and possible trends going on, How can your business fit in?
  • If you do have a lot of good ideas write them down on a frequent basis – this is one reason I blog. In fact I have had people ask if I plan on turning my blog into a book
  • Just like the bingo game I saw recently how can I provide opportunities during a lull between product or service offerings?
  • If you are a church or other organization how can you use the time between events to grow?
  • Are you writing down your “goofy ideas?”

What are times you have asked yourself I should have gone into “that business”? Have you tried to learn for such an observation? Would love to hear your thoughts.

The uniquieness of J. Patrick Greer a.k.a. linkerjpatrick

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

I can remember early in my childhood and even later in life being frustrated or even saddened that I thought I was perceived as being weird or out of place however one of the great things about being a business owner and a participant in new media is that it really allows who you are to shine. I hope you will see this post as being less about me per se and but also as an encouragement on how you can best be you.

Often in business we find ourselves being in competition with many other because we offer similar services even though we try our best to put our unique spin on our product or service odds are many of us are doing something other are doing. So, what makes the big difference in someone buying from you? Two things;

  1. There is something unique about you, yes you as a person that has attracted the customer to you
  2. You also recognize that your customer is a special person with their own special needs and they feel connected to you and trust you enough for them to give their hard earned money to you.

While my uniqueness may not be for everybody I do have traits and a history where I can connect with people in a special way;

  • I’m a native Greenvillian – growing up in the city I live in is great but I am finding myself more and more in the minority however I do have a greater understanding of the history of my town, it’s geography, weather, culture of previous generations and local politics that many who have come to to this town as a result of the nearby colleges, better economy or relocating because of all the great companies located here, quite a few being successful national and International companies.
  • I have attended both public (Elementary, middle and a state supported college) and private schools (one Christian high school and 2 years at a Christian Junior College)
  • I am seen and thought of as being very technical minded and skilled but but real interests are in the creative and communication fields
  • I earned the rank of Eagle Scout (very small percentage scouts attain this) plus I worked at the same scout camp for 7 summers straight (another rarity – most who do work at such a camp work 3 summers or less)
  • I have worked for public companies, non-profits plus I have and still own my own business
  • I have an understanding and grew up under both ends of the political spectrum to the point I refuse to affiliate myself with a political party
  • My motivation for new media work was more learning and connecting with people and less about being a geek
  • My sense of humor is both dry and bizarre
  • I often can get more done in 15 minutes than 15 days if that is all I’m given
  • I’d rather use a Mac than a Windows PC (a small percentage of the market)

So, what am I saying? I’m I bragging? It’s not my intent to brag about any of these although I am proud the town I live in, my heritage and the goals I accomplished. I do however want to share a few things about me. Maybe we can connect deeper. I also want to learn more about you as business owners, knowledge workers, sales people, etc. What can we learn about each other? How can what we learn forge a more solid business relationship? Any questions?
